Before You Start Another Diet, Watch This: 3 Things You Must Have
If you’ve ever caught yourself saying “I just need to start over on Monday” — you’re not alone.
As a nutrition coach, I’ve seen so many people jump into new programs full of motivation… only to feel burnt out, stuck, or frustrated a few weeks later. And it’s not because you “lack willpower” or “can’t stick to anything.” It’s usually because the plan itself is missing a few key pieces.
In fact, after years of coaching, I’ve learned that every successful weight loss or nutrition plan—no matter the approach—has three things in common.
Let’s break those down 👇
1. A Sustainable Plan
You can’t white-knuckle your way through a plan forever.
Most people start strong—eating as little as possible and working out as much as they can—but eventually, their body (and brain) hit a wall. Hunger ramps up, energy crashes, and motivation disappears.
That’s not a failure of discipline; that’s a failure of sustainability.
A truly successful plan feels challenging but manageable. It fits into your real life, not the other way around. It allows you to eat food you enjoy, go out to dinner, and still see progress over time.
Start small. Focus on one or two things you can do consistently for the next two weeks—like nailing breakfast or prepping your lunches. Then build from there.
If you’re not sure where to start, my 30-Day Kickstart is built around this exact approach: small, realistic habit changes that actually stick.
2. Accountability
Even the best plan doesn’t mean much without support.
Whether it’s a coach, a friend, a group, or an online community—accountability changes everything. It keeps you focused when motivation fades and gives you a space to celebrate your wins (and talk through the tough days).
If you’ve been trying to go at it alone, find someone who’s on the same path. Invite a friend to join you, or jump into a community that helps you stay connected.
I see this all the time with my clients—when they have someone in their corner, consistency skyrockets.
3. A Way to Get Out of Your Own Head
This one might surprise you.
The truth is, we can be our own biggest obstacle. The stories we tell ourselves—“I’m not consistent,” “I always quit,” “I’ll never get this right”—can quietly sabotage our progress.
That’s why I encourage clients to take a step back and actually write their story down. One of my favorite exercises is the 6-Month Home Run Story.
Grab a notebook and write (in present tense) what life looks like six months from now when you’re knocking it out of the park.
What are you doing? How do you feel? What do you say to yourself on the hard days? Get detailed about those limiting belief patterns that often pop up for you. Instead of trying to avoid them, write them out on paper, then get clear about what you did to address those thoughts in a productive and powerful way.
Seeing that on paper gives you clarity—and proof that those negative thoughts are just thoughts, not facts.
You Don’t Need a New Diet — You Need the Right Foundation
There’s no shortage of plans or programs out there. But if yours doesn’t include these three things—a sustainable structure, accountability, and mindset work—it’s going to feel like a constant uphill battle.
